A firefighter dies battling a forest fire in central Portugal and several others are injured.
TONDELA, PORTUGAL (AUGUST 22, 2013) (RTP) - A firefighter died and nine were injured on Thursday (August 22) as they battled a forest fire in central Portugal, the National Authority for Civil Protection said.
Fire brigades on the ground worked overnight to try to stop the flame from advancing in the area near the town of Tondela.Portuguese news agency LUSA said 145 fire-fighters backed by 32 vehicles and three planes were fighting the raging blazes.
Internal administration minister said the firefighters were working at a terrain that was "extraordinarily difficult."
The fire began on Wednesday (August 21). Authorities are investigating the cause.
