Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama departs for a 15-day trip to the United States to deliver sermons at various universities on issues of global conflict and Buddhism.
DHARAMSALA, HIMACHAL PRADESH, INDIA (OCTOBER 06, 2012) (ANI) - The Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama departed on a fortnight visit to theUnited States to give lectures from Kangra airport near Dharamsala in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday (October 06).
During his 15-day tour in America, he would preach and deliver at various universities on issues of global conflict and Buddhism.The spiritual leader would participate in several panel discussions at the Syracuse University, New York on the Arab Spring and resolving world conflicts through global consciousness.
China considers Dalai Lama as a separatist for his long struggle for Tibetan autonomy, and tensions over the issue are at their highest in years after a spate of protests and self-immolations by Tibetan activists, which have prompted a Chinese security crackdown.
China has ruled Tibet since 1950, when Communist troops marched in and announced its "peaceful liberation". Beijing insists Chinese rule has brought development and prosperity and denies trampling Tibetan rights.
The Dalai Lama, who has accused China of 'cultural genocide', fled to India in 1959 following a failed uprising, and unrest has continued sporadically ever since.
The Dalai Lama insists he is not seeking full independence, but says there is little he can do to convince Beijing, which he said was actually only interested in imposing its will.
