The Italian town of Pisa has been put on high flood alert, as the River Arno continues to swell amid continuing heavy rain. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes.
PISA, ITALY (JANUARY 31, 2014) (POLICE HANDOUT) - A Police helicopters monitoring the state of the river Arno, in the Tuscan town of Pisa, on Friday (January 31) have recorded footage of the river's swollen waters reaching dangerously high levels as it flowed through the centre.
Officials put the town on high flood alert as heavy rains continued to cause problems across Italy on Saturday (February 1). Meteorologists predicted bad weather to continue over the weekend. Emergency workers checked damages to houses in Pisa's historic centre.Hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate their homes amid fears that the Arno may burst its banks.
The 241-kilometre river Arno begins in the Apennine mountains and runs through Florence andPisa before flowing into the Tyrrehenian Sea.
